The Great Thing About Friends...

This is probably going to be one of the most heartfelt and awesome LiveJournal entries ever.

Before I get into this, though, I have to ask this question...am I the only person who, when blogging, has to have, like, AIM or any other chat thing turned off and no one can bother me? It just has to be me, the blog screen, and some music. Anyone else need solitary confinement?

Today is my beloved Mariah (Haun, not Carey)'s birthday. She's the big 2-4. She works at this company called Alstom with her mom. Her mom's, like, the president's secretary. For Secretary's Day, he gave her a weekend for two at The Chattanoogan, a big fancy hotel here in Chattanooga. They got to stay as guest of the hotel and everything was free - from their $150 dinner Friday night, to our drinks at their bar Friday night, to the passes to Wine Over Water, to the massages they got today. It conveniently worked out that they came this weekend for Mariah's birthday.

Mariah's former roommates, and my other loves, Audra & Tiffany, wanted to come to Chattanooga for dinner and surprise her. So, Mariah thought she was going out to dinner last night with her mom and "the boys" (me, my roommate Jesse, his fiancée Cynthia, John, and his ex-girlfriend Kerri). We went to our favorite Mexican restaurant - Las Margaritas on Hixson Pike - and I called and reserved us a table on the rooftop patio. The original plan was that we were all going to be there when Mariah & Vicki showed up, but I called and Mariah and Vicki were already there. So, the girls had to stay behind while we were seated and then I acted like I'd forgotten Mariah's birthday card in the car. I went down, got the other girls, and SURPRISE! It was an awesome time, as it is any time "the gang" can get together.

Afterwards, we went out to The Electric Cowboy because Audra and Mariah really wanted to ride the mechanical bull. I've never laughed so much in my life. Since Audra doesn't live in Chattanooga any more, she threw all caution to the wind and was dancing with anything that moved. "The girls" also really liked Cynthia, which I know meant a lot to Jesse and it meant a lot to me because it meant a lot to him, haha, if that makes sense. Cynthia really loved them too and it's great 'cuz they were - and still are - a big part of our lives. We left the Cowboy around 1:15 a.m. Tiffany and Audra drove back to Winchester last night and Mariah and her mom went back to the hotel. I waited until after they'd left the parking lot to cry.

Spending time with them took me back so much. It's the first time we'd all been together in 10 months...since Audra's birthday last November. Over the course of the night, we all reflected on our amazing friendship.

When you think about it, it really was Divine Intervention that we're all together. Let me tell you the story :o)

Let me take you back to August 2000. We were all bright-eyed, bushy tailed freshmen in college. Mariah and Michelle were best friends throughout high school and decided to go to UTC together and requested that housing place them together. For Audra and Tiffany's story, read Mariah and Michelle's, haha. UT housing also saw fit to place me with Jesse and John. All of us were placed in the same dorm as well - Boling Apartments. I had a math class with Mariah and Michelle, so I casually knew them from that class.

Their bedroom windows were directly across the courtyard from us, which meant we could see their bedroom windows from our living room window and front door. One night, John was cooking with the front door open. He looks out the door and sees four heads in a window watching him cook. Jesse came home and John told him what he saw. They took a piece of cardboard and wrote: "Call Us!" and put our dorm line number below it. Thus, the friendship was born.

These girls are the best girls EV-ER! I call them "Robbie's Angels." Michelle has been a dear friend, but has kind of gone her own way. She left UTC after one year and went back home to Knoxville, where she's now shacked up with a man twice her age. But, I digress. We've had so many good times with those girls. We've gone clubbing together; partied in dorm rooms together; celebrated every birthday for the past five years together; and gone on Spring Break together. They've also been mother figures to us boys. One of my best memories of the girls involves a time when Pi Kappa Phi (the fraternity I was in) was still active on campus. We lost a fraternity brother (i.e. he died) and they were so great to us as a group. They made dinner for all of us in their dorm room the next night.

We've been there as one of them got married and they'll be there when the first of us, Jesse, gets married in May. We'll be there for kids, job promotions, anniversaries, and kids.

This kids, is why I encourage those of you who want to go away to college, haha. It's scientifically proven that your college friends are the best friends you'll ever make because you'll naturally gravitate towards people who are more like you.

I couldn't - and wouldn't want to - imagine my life without those girls.

Okay, seriously, I have to cut middle of the day naps out. That's all there is to it. Except on Fridays. I have to take them then so I can stay up late. Anyway, the naps have to be cut out because, mentally, I can't handle them. It never fails that I wake up from a midday nap freaked. Seriously. It.NEVER.fails. I laid down about 2:30p for a nap. I kept getting woken up every hour though 'cuz my damn cell phone kept ringing. *shakes fist* Anyway, when the phone rang for the last time, I rolled over and saw it was 5:59. Immediately, despite the fact that it was daylight outside, I assumed it was someone calling to wake me up because I'd overslept for work. The show I produce hits the air at 6a. That wasn't the case. Still, I digress, it never fails that afternoon naps mess with my head. That's all I have for now.

I decided I was gonna be all Justin-y and just post pictures, but without explanation, you'd have no idea what the hell you are looking at. Yesterday, we launched a huge weekend long promotion called "Bear The Aroma For Barcelona." We have people living in port-o-potties in a Bi-Lo parking lot all weekend long for a trip to Barcelona, Spain to see Destiny's Child. That's pretty much all the explanation you need.

Anyway, I had fun with this quiz. It's a little deep but take it bitches.

You scored as Cultural Creative. Cultural Creatives are probably the newest group to enter this realm. You are a modern thinker who tends to shy away from organized religion but still feels as if there is something greater than ourselves. You are very spiritual, even if you are not religious. Every Friday, the show I produce does this 20 minute segment of music that's supposed to hype you up and make you excited for the weekend. It's called The World Famous Friday Morning Weekend Blast Off. They play old school stuff. This week they played "Welcome To The Jungle," "The Train (Come On Ride It)," "2 Legit 2 Quit," and the closer this week is "MmmBop!" I'm grinning like a stupid school girl right now. The song has put me in such a good mood, haha.

Nick called me last night. We talked for about 40 minutes.

• It's cool to be able to do things for people I care about. The Jagermeister Tour rolled into town last night. The headlining act was Alter Bridge. My brothers are HUGE fans and I was able to get them into the show and meet the band afterwards.

I'm feeling pretty good right now for someone who only got 4 hours of sleep.

All I have to say about the Bowling For Soup show last night is "Wow!" I went but totally didn't expect to have a good time. The line up was MC Lars (a laptop rapper who makes all his beats on his computer), Riddlin Kids, American Hi-Fi, and Bowling For Soup. None of it is my normal type of music. My friend Cheri went with me and I'm glad I took her. Had I gone by myself, I would have stood around along the wall looking all cool and not paying attention, and making fun of the people packed together on the floor. However, Cheri made me be one of the people packed on the floor. Basically, we had a row of people in front of us and they were the people pressed up against the barricades below the stage. I did the banging of the head, the throwing of the devil horns, and the jumping. I did it all and, again, had a blast.

Bowling For Soup are an awesome live act. I like them so much more now. I'm not gonna run out and get their albums. I don't like them that much, but any time I have a chance to go to one of their live shows, I will. They launched into a cover set halfway through. They did "...Baby One More Time." It was so kick ass. In all honesty, I liked it better than Britney's version and it was fun watching all these kids throwing the devil horns and singing along at the top of their lungs. It was a very interactive song, haha. He made us all sing along during the chorus:

Jarret: My loneliness is killing me...
Us: ...and I
Jarret: I must confess, I still believe...
Us: ...still believe...
Jarret: When I'm not with you I lose my mind, give me a sign
Us: ...hit me baby one more time.

Then after the bridge (Y'know, Oh baby, baby, how was I supposed to know, oh pretty baby, I shouldn't have let you go), the band dropped, except for the drummer, and Jarret made us all sing:

I must confess
That my loneliness
Is killing me now
Don't you know I still believe
That you will be here
And give me a sign
Hit me baby one more time

They also launched into a country set, doing Alan Jackson's "Don't Rock The Jukebox" and "Chattahoocie" and then they did "Sweet Home Alabama."

The next to last song was "Girl All The Bad Guys Want" and they surprised us by dropping confetti from the ceiling. It was cool.

All of the bands were really cool and really nice. They came out during each other's sets and sang together. Bowling For Soup closed the show with "1985" and Stacy, the lead singer from American Hi-Fi, came out to sing vocals, as did the lead singer of Riddlin Kids. Other guys came out and played instruments. After the show, we took them a block down the street to VooDoo. American Hi-Fi ended up going back to their bus though 'cuz one of the guys couldn't get in. He didn't have his ID. BFS came in and so did the RK. The guys from BFS were [b]so[/b] drunk, especially Jarret, haha. However, he was really cool to me. When they came in, Andy re-introduced them to everyone. I shook Jarret's hand and I was, like, "Dude, that was a fuckin' awesome show tonight. You guys were awesome! Thanks so much for coming." He was, like, "Hey, man, thanks for having us and thank you for rockin' out in the crowd and singing along. I saw you out there. It means a lot to us when the people who play the music enjoy the music too." VooDoo was having a lingerie show last night and, seriously, girls amaze me. None of those guys are that hot but because they're in a rock band chicks were fawning all over them. I mean, I know I'm that way with hot musicians, but I at least try to do it with attractive ones. Anyway, the band and Andy are, like, best friends now. They all hugged him goodbye when they left.

I didn't get home until 1:30a...which was a problem 'cuz I get up at 4:30a for work. After being up 21 hours and only getting 3 hours sleep, when that alarm went off, I was useless. I really felt like I was having an out of body experience. I felt really lightheaded and not in control of my body. I really didn't want to go to work. I called Andy but felt really bad about it 'cuz it was my fault I was feeling the way I was. But he was, like, "Dude, you're not coming in to work. You bust your ass every day for this radio station and you never ask for a friggin' day off. Take it. Go back to sleep now." Couldn't argue with that, haha.

I'm thinkin' I may go back to bed now....or attempt to clean up my horrible, horrible mess of a room today. Maybe I'll do both.

Job Description

[info]lightmyfire81
When people ask me what a programming assistant does, I have a hard time describing what one does because it changes daily. Programming assistants are basically assistants to the programming director. Here's what I have on my plate for today:

* First, I had to help Andy generate a report to send off to corporate. For the 4 weeks, we've participated in a national group contest. Remax sponsored it. We had to generate a report that showed when every single promo for the contest aired. We aired 317 promos over 20 days. That comes to roughly 3 promos a daypart. The exact date and time of every promo aired had to be documented. It took about an hour to do that.

* I just finished setting up the Radio Shark to record Andy's live broadcast from Bowling with Bowling For Soup.

* At 1:45p, I'm to meet him at Holiday Bowl to banner up the place, set up the podium, and set up the Comrex for his broadcast.

I'm sure other things will need to be done once things get rolling. I'll have to corral contest winners to the meet 'n' greet and other stuff.

The show is at 8p tonight. Riddlin Kids, American Hi-Fi, and Bowling For Soup. Should be a good time.

This shit is bananas!

Concert's A Bust
leighton
[info]lightmyfire81
Well, the Kelly Clarkson concert is a bust. Andy couldn't get tickets from the PD of Star 94. He told me he'd keep hounding the label but I told him not worry about it. I want to go, but realistically, the show's just at a bad time. I have to get up at 4:30 a.m. for work and the show is on a Wednesday night and two hours away. I'd like to go see Jesse McCartney and that show is on a Saturday night, which is way more feasible.

Now, I have to call Will and tell him we're not going. Not exactly looking forward to that but it shouldn't be that bad. He was really looking forward to it and I was kinda looking forward to going with him.

Now I need a date for Jesse McCartney. Any takers? (*coughs*Casey*coughs* ;p)

Other than that, not a whole lot going on. I wrapped up finals on Thursday. Both of mine were then. Prof. McGhee-Hilt has posted our final grades for Comm 231. I passed with a C, which is an improvement from the F I had at midterm. I have no doubts that I passed Comm 400 with at least a B. I have to stop by and pick up my final project and exam either today or tomorrow.

Probably gonna go home and see mom for a lil' while today.

I'm in desperate need of a haircut too. May get that taken care of. I've been putting off doing it as long as possible 'cuz I want it to look fresh for that geeky high school reunion I have to go to on the 14th.

Peace out!

I Stole This Topic From Alex....
leighton
[info]lightmyfire81
My brother called me two days ago and asked me for concert tickets. Since I've not really done anything for either of them since I started working in radio (sans hooking them up with CDs), I decided to make an effort and hook them up. They'll be seeing Alter Bridge in Chattanooga on 05/03 for free. No word yet on my Kelly Clarkson show. I'll know Monday. Found out last week that the record company has no control over tickets. A radio station in Atlanta - Star 94 - outbid all the concert promoters (including ClearChannel's very own SFX) for the exclusive rights to the show. They paid $70,000 for the show and own all rights to promotions and ticket sales.

Anyway, I stole this part of my entry from Alex. These are songs I'm really digging at the moment. If I were making a mix CD, these would be on it.

01. 50 Cent - "Candy Shop"
I'm a seasoned vet when it comes to this shit. After you work up a sweat, you can play with the stick.

02. Ashanti - "Only U"
Crazy 'bout the way you feel. I just gotta have you here and I wanna let you know, I won't ever let you go.

03. Backstreet Boys - "Incomplete"
I'm awake but my world is half asleep. I pray for this heart to be unbroken but without you all I'm going to be is incomplete.

04. Brooke Valentine - "Ghetto Superstarz"
I got drunk and I was on the floor and my legs were open and ohmygod things just happened and I was, like, queen of the prom and everybody loved me and they called me a whore though but I was, like, ohmygod I didn't mean it, my legs were just open, it just seemed to happen, and don't laugh at me! I'm not a ditzy girl....

05. Geri Halliwell - "Desire"
Lift me up and take me on, just like you did in my dream.

06. Gretchen Wilson - "Homewrecker"
Now, honey, I'm a Christian but if you keep it up, I'mma gonna go to kickin' your pretty little butt. Is that clear enough?

07. Jennifer Lopez (feat. Fat Joe) - "Hold You Down (Remix II The Remix)"
If there's a problem, I'mma ride Joe at any cost. *snicker*

08. Joss Stone - "Spoiled"
You made it impossible for me to ever love somebody else.

09. Kanye West - "Diamonds"
He write his own rhymes? Sort of. I think 'em. That mean I forgot better shit than you ever thought of.

10. Lindsay Lohan - "Nobody 'Til You"
'Til you, there was nothing but lonely nights; there was nothing but sad goodbyes for me to fall through. Come true - my dreams are awakening; somebody is making me the only one in the room, what nobody could do, nobody 'til you.

11. Loretta Lynn - "Family Tree"
I wouldn't dirty my hands on trash like you.

12. Mariah Carey - "We Belong Together"
I'm feeling all out of my element, throwing things, crying, trying to figure out where the hell I went wrong. The pain reflected in this song ain't even half of what I'm feeling inside. I need you, need you back in my life, baby.

13. Scissor Sisters - "It Can't Come Quickly Enough"
It can't come quickly enough. You've spent your whole life waiting for this moment.

14. Tyler Hilton - "How Love Should Be"
That's when I'll show you happiness the world can't see. That's how love should be.

Yesterday was a crazy long day for me. I went 22 1/2 hours before I went to bed. Craziness, right?

As usual I ran the show Friday morning, and then after it went off the air I had some little projects here and there to work on that amounted to a lot of time spent at work yesterday. I ended up not leaving until right at 3 p.m.

First up, I had to e-mail back and forth with Pete about having the cast of the show in town for Riverbend. We're going to have them here opening weekend and Ace & TJ will introduce Kid Rock on stage opening night. Should be GREAT exposure for the show.

This year is 98.1 KissFM's 5th birthday so, naturally, we want to have a big 5th anniversary birthday bash. In radio, a birthday bash means concert, haha. We've been looking at venues and dates. We're thinking Tuesday, July 26th at Camp Jordan Arena. We thought of other venues, like Rhythm & Brews, but we want it to be an all ages show and we can't do that at a place that serves alcohol. We also came up with our wish list of artists for the event. The wish list may not look stellar but realize that we're market #106, which means we're not rich like New York or Los Angeles, and we have to pretty much get acts who will do the show in exchange for support of their records. Then, all we'll have to cover for these acts is ground transportation, hotel, and backline (i.e. lighting, sound equipment, and instruments). If we get someone to co-sponsor the event - like BiLo - then they could pay for backline and we're not out that much. We tried to think of acts that would appeal to different listeners and who, together, might be able to draw out a crowd. Our wish list is:

•Aaron Carter
•Tyler Hilton
•Ingram Hill
•Nivea
•Howie Day
•SoulCrush (a local band)

We talked with Transcontinental Records on Friday and we pretty much have Aaron Carter booked. I don't look forward to working with TransCon again (go back and see my Brooke Hogan show entries for why) but - as surprising as it sounds - Aaron Carter brings in little girls and their moms.

We also called about Tyler Hilton and we can't get him then because of his summer tour. However, we can get him in May if we want him, and Heather and I have made it abundantly clear to Andy that, yes, we do want him, haha.

After I worked on that, Andy threw out there that it had been a while since I'd tried my hand at scheduling music so I scheduled Monday and Tuesday. It took me a while 'cuz I'm not as quick as him or Heather.

At 3 p.m. I left to head home and grab a bite to eat and change into a KissFM shirt. From 6-8p I had to hang out at the giant post office on Shallowford Rd. and pass out doughnuts and stress balls. It wasn't a successful event. I still had 6 dozen doughnuts when I left and that's what I started with. The people at the post office that were directing traffic seemed fond of the stress balls though.

I finally wound up at home at 9:30p and I was freakin' exhausted. I really wasn't looking forward to going out to VooDoo. However, I'd been promising my roomie John for weeks that I'd take him so I had to suck it up and go. I drank a RedBull - that wasn't mine - from the fridge. I've never really been a big believer in all that mumbo jumbo about RedBull rejuvenating you, however, I'm now a firm believer. Seriously, within half an hour I had so much freakin' energy. I was bouncing off the walls and felt like I'd had a good 5 or 6 hour nap. John was about to wring my neck 'cuz I kept bugging him to hurry up and get ready.

We got to VooDoo around 11p and the posse slowly started trickling in. Everyone was probably there by 11:45-ish. I had a really good time this week as opposed to the crappy time I had last week. The guy who almost kicked my ass last week was there but he didn't seem to have any beef this week. Plus, I made sure he didn't see me. John got trashed. By the time we left at 2:30a, he'd had 3 pineapple upside down cake shots, 2 kamikazes, a Jager shot, and a red headed slut. I only had one shot - a pineapple upside down cake - and it didn't even phase me.

Will was there. That made me happy. I've determined that I think I am starting to develop a "thing" for him. Usually, he drinks but not a lot. Last night he slowly but surely got drunk. We talked a lot. I just wanted to be near him and talk to him and have him focus his attention on me. I wanted to jump him and have mad sex with him there in the club...but I restrained myself, haha, 'cuz he had talked about how he's afraid of having a hate crime committed against him in Chattanooga. I'm a little more excited about going to Kelly Clarkson with him. However, I'm not getting my hopes up AT ALL. I'm totally not his type. I mean, I don't know how things will work out, I can't predict the future, but I don't see us ever getting together, but I do enjoy spending time with him. I like the way I feel when I'm with him.

Anyway, I'm Audi5000.

• I really need to quit taking naps in the middle of the day. I always wake up horribly confused. Just like I've done before, I woke up from a nap yesterday at 7p and thought that I was an hour and a half late for work. However, I didn't freak out as much this time around because it was bright and sunny outside and, obviously, it's not that bright and sunny at 7a.

• I have an obsession with ringtones. I have 6 downloaded and don't have a use for all of them. I have the Charlie's Angels theme as the ringtone for all the girls in my phone book. My general ringtone is "Behind These Hazel Eyes." I have Tyler Hilton's "When It Comes" for text messages 'cuz I think it's funny/cute that when a text message comes it says, "I'll let you know when it comes..." I also have Tyler Hilton's phone number and I have a special ringtone JUST for him. It's his song "Kiss On Me." Andy has his own ringtone as well. It's a funny Tyler ringtone that goes, "You got a phone and I'm singing. You got a phone and now it's ringing. You got phone, a friend, so please them both." This leaves me with a "Since U Been Gone" ringtone unused and that drives me crazy. If I ever get Will's phone number I'll use it for him 'cuz that's his favorite song ever.

• I have to be at the post office from 8p-10p today giving free donuts to idiots who waited until today to file their taxes. No offense if you are one of those idiots.

• I'm going crazy without Phlosh. Every time I go I get an SQL error and nothing shows up.

• The Kelly Clarkson show that I want to go to in May is sold out. I hope that I get good seats but they're free tickets so beggars can't be choosers. I also hope that the record rep I have to deal with isn't Vance. He's shady. I'd rather deal with Ray. He's nicer.

• I get paid today. My account will no longer be grossly negative. Let me put it this way. Basically half of my paycheck is already gone because I'm so negative.

• Heather got in trouble yesterday for saying something on air that was obviously a joke but all it takes is one person to get offended to be in a shitload of trouble.

• "The Family Guy" will be back with new episodes on May 1st. Pete, the executive producer for Ace & TJ, is on the Fox PR distribution list. He got a DVD of the first new episode and said that MOST of America will be offended by it. The premise of the episode is that Lois & Peter are on a vacation or second honeymoon. Something is wrong with their room and they're upgraded to a super sweet suite. A suite that Mel Gibson stayed in. In the suite, they find a copy of "The Passion Of The Christ 2: Crucify This!" To quote Pete, "It's so sacreligious. I know it's wrong, but there's something really funny about Jesus driving a car with a plate on front that says: WWID?"

• I'm done.

Good Morning America Was Sweet To Britney
leighton
[info]lightmyfire81
One of the perks of my job - not that this is really a perk, haha - is that I get to watch Good Morning America every morning, haha. They just did the story on Britney being preggers and had these clips from her interview with Diane Sawyer where she was talking about wanting to have a family and stuff. They closed it with a clip of "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" and rolled into Diane in the studio going, "A woman, a mother, a sweet person and we wish her all the best."

So, for the past two days, I did a mini-internship at a local TV station. After the two days, it has fully confirmed my belief that radio is my destiny. I do not want to work in TV whatsoever, haha.

I really don't have much to say. Remember how I was peeved about this annoying task Tommy has me doing? Well, he doesn't have a producer to do it for him because his producer quit, lol. On that note, there were apparently some e-mails exchanged between Andy & Tommy yesterday in which Andy threatened to dig out Tommy's balls with a dull spoon, feed them to a goat, make Tommy kill the goat and then dig his balls out of the goat's stomach if Tommy tried to hire me for the producer gig. Tommy said he couldn't afford me or otherwise I'd be his. It's nice to know that PDs are vying for me, haha. However, I spent some time thinking about it last night, if Tommy were to offer me a job in Birmingham, I probably wouldn't go. Shocking, I know. Actually, it would all depend on the job. If it was a job producing Ace & TJ, like, I do here, I most likely wouldn't take it. First of all, I'm almost done with school, so that's my #1 priority right now. If I were to leave UTC now, it'd be another 2 years before I finished and I most likely wouldn't. Secondly, I don't think I'd be very happy in Birmingham. I've had fun the couple of times I've visited, but Birmingham just doesn't seem like my kind of town. Finally, I think my chances of growing the way I would like to professionally are better in Chattanooga than in Birmingham. Also, not that I'm biased at all, haha, but I think Kiss is a much better station than The Q. I think we're more creative imaging and promotion wise and I think our station has more personality than The Q. Also, we're not quite as conservative programming wise as The Q.

Before I close, a sad note. I was in the programming office yesterday when Andy got a phone call from Epic Records. Howie Day's teenage brother was shot and killed a few nights ago and he's cancelled everything for the next few months. That was important to note 'cuz he was doing a show for us next month. I love Howie Day's music, particularly his album Australia. I'm sad for his loss.

It's like that y'all.

This entry will suck. I took a nap from, like, 4:30p-7:30p...and 43 minutes later I've still not woken up. I just feel pissy.

I'm doing a mini-internship right now. I did 4 hours today and I do 4 hours tomorrow. I'm shadowing a producer at NewsChannel 9. After the first day, I think I'll stick with radio producing. I like it better. I helped produce NewsChannel 9 For Women and NewsChannel 9 Midday today. He had me write two stories for the midday (noon) news and both made it to air. I felt fairly nifty.

I'm a bit peeved at the moment. Ace & TJ really sucked today. I had to leave the show at 7:45a to be at NewsChannel 9 by 8:15a. I didn't even listen to the show after I left because the first hour and 45 minutes had been so sucky and boring. On that note, Tommy called me and asked me to keep track of everything they talk about for the rest of the week. Why? He has his own friggin' producer in Birmingham. Why can't Derek do it? I'm just in a really foul mood over that one.

I'm also gonna kick my brother's ass. He's 18 and graduates high school this year. At Thanksgiving he told me, "I can't wait to graduate and get out of here." I talked to my dad tonight and asked him where Matthew thinks he's going to school at. My dad said he didn't know because Matthew hadn't applied to any and gets pissy when you try to talk to him about it. I told dad to not let him not go 'cuz of his girlfriend and dad said he thinks that's why he's not wanting to go. Fuckin' pisses me off.

Dear Mimi,

How are you? Anxious, I'm sure considering this is the eve of your emancipation. I send you this correspondence to offer my apologies. They say first impressions are everything, and while I was not immediately impressed with you, I have come to realize that you and I got off on the wrong foot. Having spent time with you this weekend, I realize you are a very sweet, very fun girl and I wish you continued success.

Perhaps I could "Get Your Number" and you could "Stay The Night?"

Give my regards to Jack The Wonderdog.

Robbie

P.S. I noticed yet another cameo in the video for "It's Like That." That's your dawg Randy Jackson standing next to Brian McKnight at the craps table.

I'm So Over My Social Life
leighton
[info]lightmyfire81
Yes, you read right. I'm so over my social life. Actually, I don't know if it's that I'm over my social life or if it's that I'm over VooDoo. I went out last night and did not have a bit of fun at all. I was home by 1 a.m....which is unusual for a Friday night at VooDoo. It's generally 2:30a or 3:00a before I'm home. Several things could have contributed to it though.

Friday is the only day of the week I purposely schedule a nap. I generally get in from work around 11:30a or noon, I eat lunch, watch a bit of TV, and I may lay down for 5 or 6 hours and nap so that I'm rested for going out late. I only got a 90 minute nap yesterday because I had to go to Hixson and do a "Make Out With Kiss" street hit.

My roommate John has his 15-year-old brother, Andrew, staying with us and his 17-year-old cousin, Mills, too. They've been on spring break this week and wanted to come down and hang out. I don't mind having them around because they're really cool kids and they think we're cool 'cuz we're older and we drink and go to clubs, haha. Also, Mills has a serious case of Jesse McCartney syndrome (who turned 18 today, btw). I've watched Mills grow up over the past 5 years and he's grown into quite an attractive young man. I'm a dirrty pervert, I know. Anyway, having said all that, I met John, Andrew, and Mills at Outback last night for dinner. I got home around 10:30p and started getting ready to go out to VooDoo. BTW, I just spit Diet Mountain Dew on myself. Just thought I'd share.

I got to VooDoo a little after 11p and my normal party posse wasn't there yet. Our part-timer on Kiss, Cara, was there, though, with her friend - who's name escapes me at the moment - so I had someone to talk to. I was sitting in a chair at the bar and I heard a loud commotion going on behind me. It was some guy starting some shit with a chick. I will admit that I was in the process of turning around to see what was going on, but I hadn't actually looked at the guy yet. All I hear behind me is, "Motherfucker, you best turn your ass on back around 'cuz you got no business lookin' back here," and next thing I know he's standing behind my chair. However, I was oblivious to this because, obviously, I can't see behind me. Dude was about to beat my ass and I had no clue. Cara steps between my chair and the guy and goes, "Whoa, back the fuck off. What do you think you're doing? He hasn't done shit to you." He says to Cara, "Bitch, get your hands off me." To which Cara replies, "You better be watching who you call a bitch you stupid piece of shit, because we will step outside and I will beat your motherfuckin' ass." At this point he yells something at her, and because she works for the station, Cara pulled out, "Do you know who the fuck you're dealing with? I'll have your fuckin' ass kicked out of here so fast you won't know what hit you. Get the fuck out of here." So, his friends drag him out of the club. I sit, embarrassed and humiliated. So that was probably the ultimate mood killer right there.

Right after it happens, Austyn and Will show up looking like fucking rockstars. Austyn comes up and hugs me and she was, like, "It took me forever to get ready. All of us - me, Will, Heather, Amy, Dana - had fashion crises tonight." I go, "Well, I'm just letting you know that you looking FUCKIN' HOT tonight. I love the hair, the shirt, the jeans, the bracelet. You look like a rockstar." So, she hugged me and headed off to the bar. Will - who's a friend I was introduced to through Austyn and Heather and is gay too - comes up and says, "I was almost a victim of a hate crime walking in the door. That guy was pissed off." I said, "Oh, I know. He tried to beat my ass." Will and I continue to converse for a good 10 or 15 more minutes. I've known Will for a few months now. I think he's really attractive and I love his personality. I'm trying to decide if I have a thing for him or not. I'm starting to think I may have a little bit of a thing for him because all night long I was constantly trying to be his center of attention and when I wasn't, I was pissed.

Heather finally shows up with Amy & Dana, both of whom live in L.A. Well, Amy doesn't any more. She's moved in with Heather for the next two months. Dana's only visiting until next Sunday. Dana and I have chatted on the phone before but had never met until last night and, as predicted, I love her. She's so funny and so awesome.

Will and I strike up another conversation again because Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" starts playing and Will LOVES Kelly. We talk about how fabulous her CD is and Heather brings up that I'm going to see Kelly next month, which I was kind of hoping she wouldn't do because I hadn't made up my mind who I'm taking. So, I end up agreeing to take Will with me because, as Heather put it, "He'll appreciate it more than anyone else." I will admit that I'm looking forward to spending some one on one time with him.

Anyway, I ended up deciding to leave around 12:30a but it takes me almost 25 minutes to find everyone and say goodbye 'cuz everyone is scattered out everywhere - the bar, the dance floor, and the DJ booth. I just was not having a good time. I'd almost gotten my ass beaten, no one would dance with me, and no one was really talking to me. Will tried to make me stay another half hour and I acted like I would, but once he had his back to me and was in another conversation, I snuck off.

I got home a little after 1 a.m. I disappointed Mills & Andrew. They told me when I came home I needed to be drunk or bringing drunk girls home with me. I brought neither. Jesse, John, Mills, Andrew, and I just sat on the balcony talking until 3 a.m. Jesse, John, and I shared amusing stories from college and let the guys know what they had to look forward to.

Anyway, I'm bouncing off here to get some lunch.

later.

The Mediocrity Of Mimi
leighton
[info]lightmyfire81
Dear Mimi,

Who are you and what the hell have you done with Mariah Carey?

Cheers!
Robbie

A box of 30 copies of The Emanicipation Of Mimi arrived at the station yesterday and as soon as Andy opened the box, I was on that like a fly on shit. I still don't know how I feel about the album. In the liner notes she writes, "This album is dedicated to all my real fans. Thank you for continuing to amaze and inspire me." I wish we could inspire you to make a bit of a better record. To quote Randy Jackson, "It was just aiight for me, dawg" and it doesn't live up to the hype I've been reading online.

One of the things I've always loved about Mariah is the storytelling in her lyrics and on her albums. Her songs and albums are so personal. As a lamb, I've kept up with her for years and she really showed her ability to tell her own story with albums like Butterfly and Rainbow, and I think part of the problem with Mimi, and most definitely with Charmbracelet, is that Mariah set the bar high with Butterfly and Rainbow and since has not been able to reach that bar again.

The Emancipation Of Mimi is just so...so...GENERIC. Seriously, as I'm writing this, I really want to cry because I feel so let down. Granted, all of this is just based on one listen. I will, obviously, give it several more chances before I make an ultimate decision. The uptempos are fun but after a while, they all start to sound the same. The same kind of beat, the same generic lyrics about seeing cute guys and having fun. The same can be said about the midtempos as well. This is, in this lamb's humble opinion, Mariah's most r'n'b album to date. All of the midtempos have this 70s funk/soul feel to them and they all sound like something you'd hear on an Alicia Keys album, which works for Alicia Keys, but doesn't work for Mariah. My least favorite track on Charmbracelet is "Subtle Invitation" and many of the midtempos remind me of that song with the organ and horns. Also, I don't know what kind of credibility she's trying to achieve by saying "shit" and "motherfucker" in "One & Only."

I also think that reading that 2 1/2 star review of it in Rolling Stone has biased me a bit, though reviews generally tend to not bias me. It's so true what they say about her singing big and quiet in the wrong parts.

There are some high points on the album though. "It's Like That," "We Belong Together," "Mine Again," and "Get Your Number." "Get Your Number" is so gangsta that it makes me grin. "One And Only" is not one of my favorite tracks but you have to admire that Mariah can keep up with Twista.

That's all. If the next album is Bitchin' With Bianca I don't think I'll be as disappointed. I've had 6 years to anticipate Bianca's arrival but Mimi came out of nowhere and hopefully she'll go as soon as she came.
